RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN’S
SOUTH PACIFIC
Director: GREG HART
Musical Director: TRISH SPENCE
Choreographer: CARMEL VISTOLI
The MET brings one of Rodgers and Hammersein’s greatest musicals SOUTH PACIFIC, to The Arts Theatre in May 2012. The revival of SOUTH PACIFIC, based on James Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific, won 7 Tony Awards in 2008 and played to full houses for over 2 years..
Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile’s proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfilment of a future with native girl Liat, with whom he’s fallen in love. Unfortunately he is plagued by the same fears and prejudices that haunt Nellie. Emile is recruited to accompany Joe Cable on a dangerous mission and Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices.
Director Greg Hart says, “This is the ideal show for me to make my directing debut. I cut my teeth on SOUTH PACIFIC as a fledgling actor 22 years ago playing Cable and played de Becque in a number of productions. To me SOUTH PACIFIC is the most beautiful musical ever written bar none. I am extremely privileged and lucky to be Directing SOUTH PACIFIC for such a prestigious company as THE MET. I want this production to remain faithful to the original concept; a gusty play with music about real people, tackling sensitive subjects and all glued together with the most beautiful music that is SOUTH PACIFIC.”
SOUTH PACIFIC features Emma Gordon-Smith as Nellie, John Greene as Emile De Becque, Kyle Kaczmarczyk as Cable, Carolyn Mesecke as Bloody Mary, Celeste Barone as Liat and Angus Smith as Luther Billis.
SOUTH PACIFIC magically brings to life the atmosphere of the South Pacific, and a wonderful score including “Some Enchanted Evening”, “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair”, “There Is Nothing Like A Dame”, “Bali Hai”, resulting in one of the best-loved musicals ever written.
