The Holocaust has a well-worn theatrical path. There are obviously a lot of stories from one of the blackest period in history with incredible stories of humanity and the strength of the human spirit ripe for a powerful night in the theatre.

Directors Brad Fischer and Nathan Firmin have come up with a fresh approach to make Catchment’s Godspell a must see show. They have stripped away the dated quintessential ‘70s musical image of flower children in clown makeup associated with this show and given us an alternative that is interesting and one that is easier to relate to in this era.

The four leading characters all gave notable performances.  Chris van Raay as the sentimental bloke Bill was very engaging.  He had a beautiful voice and just the right amount of cheek to be convincing as the loveable hero of the story.

The beauty salon stage design was striking. With loads of pink and floral it peaked just below tacky and gave a homey feel to the set. Very elaborate, it had everything a girl could need from a nail station, to a wash basin to the hairdressing corner and more.

There were many songs and comedy sketches within the show. One of the highlights was “Ease on Down the Road” from the Wiz (1990). Vocally the song was excellent; the choreography was interesting, costumes wonderful and energy high.

This adaptation, in English, has been written especially for Lyric Opera of Melbourne and brings a number of modern references to the story. With very basic sets and minimal lighting the production relied totally on the quality of the performance and achieved admiral results with excellent vocals, wonderful balance between orchestra and voice and generally strong acting.
